The Digital Commons-Heartland User Group (DC-HUG) met at MSU on Thursday October 24th and Friday October 25th for their third annual meeting. Digital Commons is the software platform that BearWorks, MSU’s institutional repository, runs on. The meeting drew attendees representing eleven institutions from six states for presentations and discussion of Digital Commons, institutional repositories, and open access to journal literature. Brooks Travis is attending, as Libraries-directed travel, the EBSCO Users Group for Academic Libraries meeting in San Antonio, Texas. Many of the sessions will focus on FOLIO, EDS, and OpenAthens. MSU recently entered into a three-year contract with EBSCO to implement these systems at MSU in 2020. Last Thursday Tom Peters made a brief presentation about the First FOLIO at MSU Project at the monthly meeting of the MSU Faculty Senate. Several Senators asked questions about the project. Last week the Missouri Association for Museums and Archives (MAMA) held their annual conference in Springfield for the first time. Attendees toured Bass Pro, Wonders of Wildlife, The Discovery Center, Springfield Botanical Gardens, History Museum on the Square, Springfield Art Museum, and Missouri State University’s Special Collections and Archives. Archivist Tracie Gieselman-Holthaus and Digital Archivist Shannon Mawhiney of the MSU Libraries Special Collections & Archives recently presented to Ozark High School’s Local History and Folklore class about archiving, digital archiving, and local history.
Professor Tracy Stout provided four informational presentations on Open Educational Resources last week. Tracy’s presentations included an overview of, finding, and evaluating OER. These presentations were in collaboration with FCTL (The MSU Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning) in anticipation of the upcoming special curriculum innovation grant to support MSU faculty in the creation of a “Zero Textbook” course. On Wednesday, October 9, authors Roland and Marie Smith visited with Greenwood students in grades K-5. Marie Smith is best known for her alphabet books and Roland Smith has written over 40 books, including Zach’s Lie, a previous winner of the Missouri Mark Twain Award. Over 150 students attended the event, which was sponsored by the Greenwood PTA and coordinated by Haseltine Librarian, Dea Borneman.
