On Thursday, August 22, 2019, Dean Tom Peters interviewed Brenda Lee at her home in Nashville, Tennessee. The interview was recorded and will become part of the growing oral history collection of the MSU Libraries.  Brenda Lee was “discovered” by Red Foley when he performed on February 23, 1956 at the Bell Auditorium in Augusta, Georgia, where Brenda and her family were living. Lindsey Taggart, on behalf of MSU Libraries, was awarded a $500 assessment grant from the MSU Office of Assessment. Funding from the grant will be used to incentivize student leadership in two focus groups, building on an ongoing Libraries assessment project. The grant also will support student participation in a panel presentation at the Library Research Seminar VII, an academic library conference held at the University of South Carolina. 

Our own Jeffrey Lawson has been such a valued addition to the team in the Digitization Lab of the MSU Libraries that a decision was made this week to increase his time in the lab. In addition, he now will be reporting to Shannon Mawhiney, the digital archivist.  Jeffrey will continue to work in Circulation Services, too. He’s still going to continue to open Duane G. Meyer Library, help out on weekends/holidays,  and continue through the ramp down of fines…

Renovation of the Sunderland Foundation Auditorium — Room 101 off the main lobby of Duane G. Meyer Library — is almost complete. Furniture is scheduled to arrive and be installed today, Sept. 5, 2019. When the new instructor’s smart podium is installed, the renovation will be complete and the renovated auditorium will be ready for use. 

Recently the MSU Libraries began supporting the MSU LEAD Program (Leadership, Education, And Development) by having a small collection of leadership books, located in the recently renovated “Living Room” on the First (main) Level of Duane G. The Encyclopedia of Anthropology is a five-volume subject encyclopedia published as an e-resource with over 1,000 entries covering physical/biological anthropology, archaeology, cultural/social anthropology, linguistics, and applied anthropology. This is a great resource due to the nearly 300 internationally renowned experts, professors, and scholars who have contributed content to it. Special attention is given to the following: hominid evolution, primate behavior, genetics, ancient civilizations, cross-cultural studies, social theories, and the value of human language for symbolic communication.

The New Student Welcome event was a huge success! We had around 340 new students attend this year’s event. The DJ kept everyone entertained and announced winners for the top prizes from the MSU Bookstore, 1984, Blue Room Comedy Club, and our very own MSU Libraries VIP Study Room.

The MSU Libraries has ended a year-long pilot program with streaming media service Kanopy. While several factors contributed to this decision, the most pressing issue is that current budget constraints make an ongoing commitment with Kanopy unsustainable at this time. Some titles will still be available until the license expires; please see the full list for details. 

Several faculty and staff members of the MSU Libraries have contributed to a forthcoming book from the Ozarks Studies Institute, titled TechnOzarks: Essays on Technology, Regional Economy, and Culture. The book currently is being printed  and will be available for sale in a little over a month.
