Curriculum Mapping for Academic Libraries

Curriculum Mapping for Academic Libraries

From January 24 to 26th, Jessica Bennett attended an Amigos Library Services webinar focused on curriculum mapping for academic libraries.  Curriculum mapping is a process for evaluating the curriculum’s cohesiveness, proper sequencing, and goal achievement. Academic libraries use it to assess connections and overlap between information literacy and the program curriculum to identify library instruction opportunities.

Some major points addressed in the webinar were learning how to analyze course descriptions, determine potential connections for information literacy instruction, and produce a curriculum map. Also, helping faculty understand how librarians can support their students across the curriculum.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understanding the goals and purposes of curriculum mapping
  • Analyze a curriculum map to assess current library instructional practices and impacts
  • Develop a plan to implement and communicate library instruction opportunities and changes

Based on the above points, Jessica and the other members of the Information Literacy Team will continue to identify and reach out to courses across the disciplines that contain a significant research component.  Given the academic realignment happening presently, this will be an ongoing process.
