The refurbishment of the southwest quadrant of the Second Level of Duane G. Meyer Library on the Springfield campus of Missouri State University was well-nigh completed over the winter holiday break now ending. We’re just waiting for a few missing parts and pieces, but the area is ready to use now. Meet MSU Libraries’ Student Employee of the Month for January, Stephanie Lor! Works in: Meyer Library’s Circulation Major: Global Studies Favorite Book: The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand Something students should know about the libraries: “One thing I think students should know about the library is that if you ever need help with your research at all, the librarians would gladly help you with it. Also, the library has comfortable chairs.”

Pearl the Pig, an anonymous porcine donor, but rumored to be a direct descendant of Arnold Ziffel, star of the Green Acres television program, gave a large donation of non-perishable food items that made the “Other” category of pets the big winner of the first annual Pet Wars. This friendly competition encouraged employees of the MSU Libraries to donate food and personal care items to Ozarks Food Harvest. The Folk Card Collection is an ongoing project of Dr. Rachel Gholson, Associate Professor in MSU’s English Department, and students in her folklore classes. Students are regularly asked to speak with family and friends in order to gather information on a variety of folklore. While much of the material is focused on the Ozarks, other geographical areas are included. The collection was acquired beginning in 2004 and receives regular additions. Part of the eJournal collections from MSU Libraries, ScienceDirect provides full-text access from 1998-present to about 175 journals published by Elsevier Science which are subscribed to by MSU Libraries, along with complimentary access to another 80 titles with limited coverage. The majority of journal titles are from the natural and applied science areas of biology, botany, medicine, chemistry, mathematics, computer sciences, etc., but social science titles such as from business, psychology, library science, economics, and history are also part of the collection. The stress relieving event held in Room 107 of Duane G. Meyer Library on Tuesday, December 12, 2017, during Finals Week at MSU, was a huge success. Over 300 students took breaks from their studies to pet the dogs. The dogs and their owners were affiliated Pet Therapy of the Ozarks, a volunteer organization that coordinates visits to schools, hospitals, nursing homes, and other events where petting a dog for a few minutes will provide a smile and lower everyone’s stress…

On Tuesday, December 5, 2017 the Ozarks Lesbian and Gay Archive (OLGA)received a $4,720 grant award from Springfield Black Tie. Thanks to ongoing support from Springfield Black Tie, OLGA will be able to better preserve this area’s LGBTQ history and culture.  Part of the grant will be used to transfer “This Gay Life” to digital format.
