Hardcover Edition of Frost Flowers Book

Hardcover Edition of Frost Flowers Book

The hardcover edition of the new book about Frost Flowers, with Dr. Michelle Olsen as the author and photographer, is due back from the printer/binder early next week.

Dr. Michelle D. Olsen, Director of Institutional Research at Missouri State University, has painstakingly compiled a book of over 100 stunning photographs of frost flowers, a phenomenon unique to the Ozarks Mountain region of the country.

Also called Crystallofolia, frost flowers are sculptures of ice that extrude from the stem of the Verbesina virginica plant during the late fall, winter, and early spring seasons, when the temperatures are low enough for water in the plant’s stem to cool to a degree that is ripe for the occurrence.

Olsen has photographed these sculptures for several years now and has garnered an online following. Now, the Ozarks Studies Institute is publishing a book of her photos and whimsical text narrating her journey of discovery and deeper learning about this phenomenon.

The hardcover edition is priced at $59.95. The paperback edition ($29.95) has been available for several weeks now.  Both may be ordered online. Copies may be picked up in Room 006a on the Lower Level of Duane G. Meyer Library, or they may be shipped for an additional shipping fee of $7.
