U. S. Grant Exhibit Coming to Meyer Library
A touring exhibit from Missouri Humanities about Ulysses S. Grant, a military officer and politician who served as the 18th U.S. President from 1869 to 1877, will be on display April 3rd through 25th on the main level of Duane G. Meyer Library on the main Springfield campus of Missouri State University.
The exhibit is free and open to the public whenever the library is open. The display will be located on the main level in the center of the floor near the elevators. Metered parking is available in Lot 19 southwest of the Library, as well as in Bear Park South.
Grant was born over 200 years ago, on April 27, 1822. He married Julia Boggs Dent, who grew up on a plantation just west of St. Louis. Her father was a slave holding planter and merchant. During the Reconstruction Era, Grant was an advocate for civil rights of all Americans, including Blacks.
This exhibit is organized by reference to the Personal Memoirs of Ulysses S. Grant, composed by the dying ex-President in 1884-85. Of interest to all Missourians: Mark Twain was the prime mover behind Grant’s Memoirs. This is just one of the stories you will discover when you visit the exhibit.
