An article by student reporter Brenna Lumbley in this week’s Standard, the student-run newspaper at Missouri State University, highlights the current “Over There” exhibit about Missouri involvement in the First World War. 

The exhibit was a great collaboration, not only with the Missouri Humanities Council and the Springfield-Greene County Library District, but also within the MSU Libraries. Numerous units worked together to help transport the display cases, assist in exhibit construction, and create supplemental displays. Craig Amason helped coordinate the effort. 

The entire unit in Special Collections contributed to the hallway display and doing so allowed them to highlight the Morgan Military Insignia Collection and the University Archives. For example, there is a of display medals from the Morgan Collection illustrating the honors bestowed upon Myrl Billings, an African American soldier who fought in France during World War I. The Katherine G. Lederer Collections contains black and white images of the Croix de Guerre and Victory Medal awarded to Billings, so displaying actual medals added to the significance of Springfield’s ties to the War.

“Over There: Missouri and The Great War” is scheduled to be on display in Room 107 on the Main Level of Duane G. Meyer Library until February 27, 2020.
